5 Ways to Cut Energy Costs on Commercial Refrigeration in Australia

by yufanjiang 16 Jun 2026

Commercial refrigeration never clocks off. It runs every hour of every day, which means it's often the single biggest line on a venue's electricity bill. The good news: a handful of low-cost habits and smart buying decisions can shave a real chunk off that cost — without ever putting your stock at risk. Here are five that work.

1. Seal the cold in

Worn or dirty door gaskets are the quiet money-waster of commercial kitchens. If a seal is cracked, hard, or doesn't grip a sheet of paper when you close the door on it, cold air is leaking and the compressor is working overtime to compensate. Check seals monthly and replace them the moment they fail — it's one of the cheapest fixes with the fastest payback.

2. Give the condenser room to breathe

A refrigerator dumps heat through its condenser coils. Pack stock or boxes against the vents, or let the coils clog with dust, and the unit runs hotter, longer and more expensively. Keep clearance around every unit, and clean the condenser coils regularly. A clean, well-ventilated fridge can use noticeably less power than a neglected one of the same model.

3. Right-size — don't over-buy

A half-empty cold room or oversized freezer is chilling air you're not using. When you're planning capacity, match the unit to the stock you actually hold. Two right-sized units often cost less to run than one oversized one — and give you redundancy if one needs a service. Browse the full range and spec to your real volume, not your busiest day of the year.

4. Choose glass doors and LED over open and old

When it's time to replace, the unit you buy sets your running cost for the next decade. Glass-door beverage coolers hold temperature far better than open multidecks. LED interior lighting runs cooler and cheaper than old fluorescent tubes. A slightly higher purchase price on an efficient unit is usually repaid in power savings well inside its working life.

5. Set the right temperature — and check it

Every degree colder than you need costs money. Run chillers and freezers at the correct, safe set-point for the stock they hold rather than "as cold as it goes". Keep a thermometer in each unit and check it, so you catch a drifting fridge before it spikes your bill — or spoils stock.

The bottom line

Energy is one of the few costs in a venue you can actively manage. Maintain your seals and coils, right-size your fleet, and buy efficient when you upgrade — the savings compound every single day the equipment runs.
